08 February 2011

SLC's Planning committee today voted to approve the application from Scotgen for the Gasification Plant at Dovesdale. The decision was upheld by a result of 14 votes to 9, despite around 20,000 objections from local residents. The Council cited the lack of objection from SEPA and the current lack of recyclyng facilities in South Lanarkshire as factors in the decision.

A  report from The Action Group Against Dovesdale Incinerator (AGADI) on a recent lecture;

Professor Connett Ph.D - Zero Waste Not Incineration Lecture - Eric Liddel Centre, 12th Jan 2011.

Members of the Action Group attended the above lecture this week and met with Professor Connett to discuss the campaign against the Dovesdale incinerator. There was an interesting and informative discussion on why Incineration is not the answer to our waste problems and further detail on increased Health issues related directly to incineration. On a positive note, there was a lengthy discussion about waste alteratives and some of the initiative in other parts of the world where communities are recycling up to 77% of all their waste.

There is a link to the Powerpoint presentation on the GAIN website as follows -

It is likely that the planning decision on the Incinerator may be made on Tuesday 8th of February 2011. The Action Group are organising a peaceful protest at the Council Offices in Hamilton that day, Everyone is welcome to show the level of feeling and demonstrate to the councillors that we, their constituents are very interested on how they will be voting that day. Bring all your friends and family!

30 August 2010
Correspondence from Dovesdale action group;

As of Friday 20 August 2010, the Action Group Against Dovesdale Incinerator have, on your behalf, submitted over 20,000 objection letters to South Lanarkshire Council.

Check the Evening Times (21/08/10)

This is clear message to the developer Scotgen, South Lanarkshire Council, Elected Members and those that have considered this Incinerator should go ahead, that every community in South Lanarkshire and beyond, is totally opposed to this development. We do not need this type of Waste Disposal, it's only adding to the Environmental Change problems being experienced World Wide and in turn our communities Health. South Lanarkshire Council must not in anyway consider Incineration as a solution to the counties Waste problems.

20,000 objections is fantastic. Remember this, these objection letters were distributed, collected/returned and delivered to the Council in just over TWO weeks. What an achievement from you all.

The Action Group is continuing the campaign against the proposed Incinerator and we still NEED your support. So keep checking - www.dovesdaleincinerator.info for the latest news and forthcoming information on events. We will email you as normal with any updates.

Thanks to you all, this makes the relentless work and overall effort of Everyone in the Action Group very worthwhile.
